For the 10th anniversary of his studio, designer Jorge Penadés, best known for his work with the shoe brand Camper, investigated the design potential of the humble olive tree root, a material that is mostly used for firewood in Spain.

This delightfully named proposal from the contract furniture makers Actiu and design studio WANNA brings a mobile outdoor experience, including leafy privacy with acoustical benefits, to ‘dead space’ office corners.

Perhaps the most heartfelt contribution to the festival came from Rafael Salvador, the great nephew of the great Spanish rationalist architect José Antonio Coderch. His homage to the meastro’s DISA light fitting put this iconic work in the foyer of the OnlyYou boutique hotel and shed light on its original fanbase, which included Picasso and Marcel Duchamp.

Mario Cucinella for Roca Gallery

For the window of Roca Gallery, the showroom of Spain’s leading bathroom furniture and fittings manufacturer, Italian architect Mario Cucinella created a giant, 3D-printed sculpture of integrated blocks, color graduated to represent the extreme temperatures necessary to transform clay to ceramic. Titled ‘Sparking Change’, it symbolizes Roca’s innovation in energy-saving furnaces in their factories.

In each edition of the Madrid Design Festival, the organizers continue to cast their net wider and invite in smaller studios of Madrid’s barrios. For Moneo Brock Studio, located in Madrid’s historic Prosperidad neighborhood, global design expert Marisa Santamaria curated Mujer X Mujer, a collective exhibition of works from female designers.

The festival put a focus on wool, or oro blanco (‘white gold’) as it was once called when the material was an important trading commodity in Spain. Textile designers Regina Dejiménez and Inés Sistiaga worked closely with a traditional wool manufacturer in Cuenca for this dream-like installation inspired by the organic shelters used by mountain shepherds.

La Linea Suena Exhibition

La Linea Suena (or ‘The Line Dreams’) exhibition brought together 45 designers to explore light as a transformative element. Spain’s established lighting wizards, including Hector Serrano, Antoni Arola and Álvaro Catalán de Ocón were present. Eliurpi, a duo from Barcelona, presented three lamps that displayed a handcrafted approach to design that won them the 2025 Spanish Contemporary Artisan Award and a blossoming fanbase.

For the furniture company Sancal, designer Imma Bermúdez transformed the traditional, geometrically formed Spanish school desk with digitally printed wooden surfaces developed by Finsa. Ideal more for bars and offices than educational facilities, they will be on sale in limited edition from May 2025.   

Connection at Gandia Blasco

Connecting design and master craftsmanship though a Mediterranean lens formed the narrative of the Connection exhibition at Gandia Blasco’s Madrid showroom. Standout pieces included this dreamy bespoke tapestry created by the textile artist Charlotte Lancelot. Curated by Marta Velea, the pieces are available through her online Spanish design, art and craft portal Caotics.
