Dyson has built a reputation on reinventing device categories, from vacuums to hair styling. Now, the brand has deepened its disruption of the hair sector by launching chitosan-infused styling creams and serums and a multi-styler/dryer, the Dyson Airwrap i.d. The launches come nearly 2 years following a $500-million investment in hair innovation by Dyson.
Inside the Dyson Chitosan Pre-Style Cream and Chitosan Post-Style Serum
The Post-Style Serum (ideal for all hair types) pairs chitosan with moisturizing hyaluronic acid and an amino acid blend intended to repair cuticle damage.DysonDyson’s first wet line styling products, the refillable Chitosan Pre-Style Cream and Chitosan Post-Style Serum ($59.99; refills at $54.99), are built around chitosan, a bioactive polymer.
A 2022 report in the journal Cosmetics noted, “[C]hitosan’s ability for interacting electrostatically with negatively charged substrates (e.g., skin or damaged hair), resulting in the formation of polymeric films which contribute to the conditioning and moisturizing of cosmetic substrates, makes this polymer an excellent candidate for the design of skin and hair care formulations.”
Dyson uses chitosan derived from the cell walls of oyster mushrooms, rather than shellfish. In mushrooms, chitosan “gives the fungi its shape,” per Dyson, which inspired its use in the new styling products.
Kathleen Pierce, president of beauty at Dyson, “Our engineers have rigorously tested to find the optimum percentage of chitosan for all-day, flexible hold, while maintaining natural movement.”
Per the brand, chitosan supports the hair “strand by strand, protecting your styles from frizz, even in high humidity.”
The ingredient is paired in the Post-Style Serum (ideal for all hair types) with moisturizing hyaluronic acid and an amino acid blend intended to repair cuticle damage.
The Chitosan Pre-Style Cream, meanwhile, is available in four variants:
- Straight to Wavy (Light and Rich Conditioning)
- Curly to Coily (Light and Rich Conditioning)
The formulation pairs chitosan with grapeseed, castor and argan oils, beeswax, and heat protectant materials to combat frizz and boost shine.
