BASF’s Care Chemicals group started a new chapter in sustainability and climate-adaptive beauty during Cosmet’Agora, held Jan. 14 and 15, 2025, in Paris. Driven by innovations in sustainability, transparency and science, the company presented formula concepts to address the impacts of climate change — i.e., varying humidity, temperature shifts and intensified UV exposure.
Climate-Adaptive Concepts
BASF’s initiative is built around four key themes:
- Hydrating and cooling: Reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and delivering immediate hydration through non-oily, cocooning textures; formulating with sustainable emollients such as Cetiol Ultimate (INCI: Undecane (and) Tridecane) and Cetiol iSan (INCI: Tridecane); and natural-origin emulsifiers like Emulgade Verde 10 MS (INCI: Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate) and 10 OL (INCI: Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate);
- Cleansing and hair protection: Mild cleansing solutions enriched with protective barriers for both skin (Lamesoft PO65; INCI: Coco-Glucoside (and) Glyceryl Oleate) and hair (Gluadin Kera P-LM; INCI: Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein), featuring readily biodegradable alternatives to sulfate surfactants (e.g., Plantacare range) and natural-origin oils and esters such as Cetiol OE (INCI: Dicaprylyl Ether) and Cegesoft SB45 TR (INCI: Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (EU) Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (PCPC));
- UV protection: Advanced sun care with broad-spectrum UV solutions to meet consumer demand for protection with sensory appeal; highlighted ingredients include Tinomax CC (INCI: Calcium Carbonate (and) Hydroxyapatite), Tinosorb A2B (INCI: Tris-Biphenyl Triazine (nano)) and Uvinul TS Hydro, supported by natural-origin emulsifiers;
- Optimistic glow: A focus on natural makeup routines enhanced with minimalist ingredients from renewable feedstocks, like Cosmedia Gel CC (INCI: Dicaprylyl Carbonate (and) Stearalkonium Hectorite (and) Propylene Carbonate), Verdessence brand Alginate (INCI: Algin) and Xanthan (INCI: Xanthan Gum), and RiceTouch (INCI: Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch), delivering skin-tone-inspired shades and solutions for eyes and lips.
Sustainable Development and Circularity
Valérie Pian-Parison, senior marketing manager at BASF France, highlighted the company’s mission. “At BASF, we take our responsibility seriously, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals with eco-conscious solutions and addressing consumers’ demand for new beauty routines.”
During Cosmet’Agora, the company’s experts were available to explore innovative textures and discuss ingredient circularity, sourcing traceability and methods for reporting carbon footprints. These efforts align with BASF’s overarching strategy, Care 360° – Solutions for Sustainable Life.
By combining transparency, sustainability and cutting-edge science, BASF aims to redefine personal care to meet the evolving demands of eco-conscious consumers, per the company.
